Alternative Powertrain
In the Alternative Powertrain subunit we work for several renowned OEMs to develop future-proof drive systems and integrate them in existing test vehicles. Here Semcon’s engineers develop engines and drive trains which meet the complex requirements of future mobility and integrate hybrid and electric components.
A major technical concern of our developers is thermal management of the drive trains, the reason being that the dramatically reduced energy content of current batteries, as compared with fossil fuels, makes increased demands on a highly efficient drive train in terms of passenger comfort.
Accordingly, development of the drive train takes place in a context which reflects the conflict between vehicle cruising range on the one hand and passenger demand for a comfortable environment on the other. Among the promising approaches are electrically powered supplementary heater systems or – in the case of hybrid drive trains – systems which utilize the residual heat of exhaust gases.
