Energy investigation of Vopaks tank systems

Vopak in Göteborg hired Semcon to carry out an energy assessment of tank usage in heated oil tanks. This study was conducted by using a CFD simulation.

The assignment was to study the design of hot water loops, to study the temperature regulation of the tank, and to study the control valves controlling hot water flow through the tank. The results of the simulation were verified against measurements in the field.

In addition, energy consumption in the entire plant was surveyed. The work included:

• Insulation estimates of oil storage tanks
• Detection of heat loss through infrared cameras
• Estimates of the annual operating cost of pumps, lights and equipment consuming electricity.

The result of the energy study was presented in a report with proposals for measures to be implemented to achieve the energy savings targeted.
